Hal Grades Your Bike Locking

Click To Play
New York City - In honor of Bike Month, Clarence Eckerson, Jr. of SteetFilms resurrects this 2003 bikeTV classic. It was his first work to gain worldwide noterity in the alternative transportation world.

They hit the streets of Soho with the help of Bicycle Habitat’s most famous mechanic Hal Ruzal - who humorously grades the bike locking ability of New Yorkers. Sure he’s harsh, but also damn funny while dispensing useful anecdotes from his many decades in the biz. Hopefully you’ll learn how to keep your bike safe and avoid a failing grade.

Cheating Doesn't pay for this Racer

Here is a little gem from the early days of internet video. Perhaps you remember it. I happen to think it's real but there is a good argument for it being staged.

Love Your Bike... Seriously

MANCHESTER, England, England*. From across the Atlantic Sea, Carlton Reid of quickrelease.tv finds us this naughty little gem. It's not for children. Perhaps it's not for adults either - but I laughed out loud. Plus, it's all intented to get more folks on their bikes... and that's a good thing.

Maintenance Video Responses and 'Bicycle Repairman'

Scroll down for Monty Python's "Bicycle Repairman video.

Big thanks to all the folks who responded with pointers for our first maintenance video on chain lubrication. We also really appreciate the ideas for future shows.

Buzz from Newton, MA, reminds beginners to avoid getting lubricant on tires or wheel rims. Good point, Buzz. It's a safety issue. Brakes and lube don't mix.

Jeff from Boston, MA, finds that he likes to remove the chain every 1 to 2 weeks. He finds that is the only way to get the grit out. Personally, I like to use a wax based lubricant that sheds the grit. The downside is that I have to refresh often during the rainy season.

Tom from BicycleXC in Crofton, MD asks for more tips for chain set up and maintenance for fixed gear bikes. Hey, Tom I know you have the camera and the know how. Any chance you can make us a video?

We had some great ideas for future shows including wheel truing, pre-ride safety check, and advanced topics such as repacking hubs. I plan to get to all of those ideas. Thanks again for your input especially from the folks at bikeforums.net.

Amsterdam Canal Jump

I got a kick out of this video of a young dutchman jumping a canal on his bike. It ends in a cliff hanger, though. You can follow the links on the video and see the conclusion(s) or you can watch my hacked quicktime version below.
